Behind the scenes facts about this app:

i) Specifically designed for Ancient Greek studies: Ancient Greek Reference has been originally designed for students attending Italian Liceo Classico, which is the leading secondary school where the study of Ancient Greek is compulsory. About 280.000 Italian students attend Liceo Classico every year.

ii) Exclusive contents: all the contents of this app are original and developed specifically for this app. They are copyright pending and you won’t find them anywhere else on the internet nor in libraries. That’s the only way to obtain a high quality tool optimized for your needs.

iii) #1 in Italy among students attending Liceo Classico and universities: this app became - and still is - the main reference tool for Ancient Greek studies in Italy (where it is named “Greco Antico App”). It has now been rearranged with a new layout and an English translation so that students worldwide are able to enjoy its functionalities.

Pros and cons of Ancient Greek Reference app for iPhone and iPad

Ancient Greek Reference app good for

I think it is the best Ancient Greek grammar app to easily consult.
I rarely review but I saw there were no reviews of this app soI decided to give it a try. I dont know much Greek (never saw any classes offered for it where I live - I am from California) but I really like how it lays out all the grammatical forms and explains it so that I can slowly make my way through the programs! I have downloaded other Ancient Greek apps - one has vocabulary flash cards, another has a dictionary and collections of epic poems and plays in their original Greek, and this completes the set by explaining the grammar, so I am very pleased. Going to read Euripides one word at a time! I do wish there were some audio function so I could make sure I was pronouncing things right - not that anyone can truly pronounce Ancient Greek nowadays, but I may be extremely off and I dont know.
Many grammatical topics are only in the lesson section and require the search feature to find. This is difficult if you learned a different name for a construction, e.g. Purpose clause instead of Final clause. I would personally prefer the grammar tab to be divided into Accidence and Syntax with all topics in either category. It is still a good buy — it saves time from leafing through a grammar and includes paradigms. Examples of syntactical constructions could be expanded and include prose excerpts.

Some bad moments

The app has great information and I really like the navigation. It is a bit overpriced. The problem I have is you can tell the creator is not a native English speaker. As a note, the words are spelled in the British, not American, style e.g. "utilise" instead of "utilize" (which I dont mind at all). At times the English has grammatical issues and some English sentences are written oddly. Since I am not an expert in Greek I am not sure if the app has mistakes in Greek too, but I am worried with frequent English mistakes that the Greek is not entirely trustworthy. It also makes me wonder if the explanations in English are conveyed accurately enough for an English speaker to really learn Greek grammar from this app.
This is a great app for reference or as a refresher (Ive been using it to revisit Greek after studying it in school a few years ago). Those without any background in the language may need something more extensive, but this app in combination with traditional instruction and/or a quiz app to test your progress, can be really helpful. I especially like the selections from famous Ancient Greek writers.
